This section lists the outcomes achieved by the ‘Being Asian in Australia and the United States’ project, such as publications, fieldwork, events, presentations and other initiatives.

This research contributes directly to ‘National Research Priority 4: Safeguarding Australia; Priority Goal: Understanding Our Region and the World.’

Australia’s engagement with Asia and North America remains central to our national security and economic development. This research offers a unique window into the experiences and sensibilities of a constituency within the Australian population which has, to date, been relatively unacknowledged in the official domain. International relations is dominated by political and economic considerations, and pressing work needs to take place in view of increasing mobility of populations and the resulting potential for cross-cultural tensions. A better understanding about Asians in Australia and the US will enhance Australia’s capacity to interpret itself to Asia and North America. The research will strengthen our understanding of how Asian diasporic identities and communities are formed and the ways in which they relate to Asia and other diasporic communities in the West. Information about transnational Asian communities is also an important means of improving our ability to respond to changing conditions within Australia and the region at large.
